Mavrata is built in the southeastern part of Kefalonia and has 139 residents.
The houses are small with beautiful gardens full of flowers. Residents are mainly farmers, since in the region people grow olives and vines.
Locals claim that in the old days, the village name was Labrata, but after a fatal illness and a large shipwreck the women of the village started wore all black so the guests gave the village the name Mavrata.
In the Second World War, in 1941, the British submarine Perseus sank in the region struck by an Italian mine. The wreck was discovered and explored 56 years after by successive diving from Kostas Thoctarides.
In the village there are limited number of accommodation but very close are the very touristic villages of Katelios and Skala that cover all possible needs of the visitors.
