The most famous beaches of Kefalonia

Kefalonia is one of the largest islands of Greece with incredible natural beauties, that tourism has not changed the character of the island to a minimum. Furthermore, in Kefalonia you will definitely find some of the best beaches in Europe:

Myrtos Beach

Myrtos is undeniably the most famous beach of Kefalonia. It is located 29 km north of Argostoli, the capital city of the island, at the area of Pylaros. Myrtos is constantly listed in travel publications as one of the top 30 beaches in the world. It has been awarded many times for its cleanness and the natural beauty.

The beach is positioned between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros. It has a semi-circular shape surrounded by impressive white rocky cliffs with lush flora on top of them, creating a spectacular setting. The lush green area, the white pebbles and the crystal waters, compose a stunning scenery. The natural beauty of Myrtos is the trademark of Kefalonia and one of the most photographed places in Greece. The western coast of Myrtos offers spectacular sunset views.

The beach is well-organized at the most part with a beach bar, umbrellas and sundecks while a small part remains completely un-spoilt. There is no water sport center available but if you are a fun of extreme sports you can try tandem paragliding.

Caution is needed when it comes to the waves, as there are strong currents and thus may not be ideal for toddlers and small children.

Myrtos is easily accessed by all means of transport. While descending the beach, you will enjoy some amazing views from above.

Antisamos

Antisamos Beach lies 30 kilometers east of Argostoli, and pretty close to the port of Sami. It is one of Kefalonia’s most popular swimming and sunbathing spots. Awarded with the blue flag, Antisamos is known for its natural beauty, which includes blue waters, white pebble and a stunning backdrop of green hills.

Antisamos is well organized with beach bars, umbrellas and sundecks. Also there is a water sport center available.

It has gained worldwide recognition from the Hollywood movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, where some of the scenes were filmed.

In Sami, it is easily accessible from a beach road. Antisamos is one of the beaches that fascinate most Kefalonia’s visitors. On the way to the bay, the view is breathtaking and once you arrive at the beach the exquisite scenery continues before your eyes.

Makris Gialos

Makris Gialos is located 3 kilometers south of Argostoli, at the area of Lassi. It is a lovely tourist resort situated around a crystalline bay. It is one of Kefalonia’s most popular beaches, known for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Great for kids as it is sandy and the waters, near the beach, are shallow.

Makris Gialos, like other beaches of the island, has a beautiful setting with lush flora and big pine trees. Some rock formations are strewn about, giving the area an unusual feel.

It is one of the most well-organized beaches with beach bar, umbrellas, sundecks and water sport center. It is easily accessed by all means of transport.

Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos is also in the area of Lassi, right next to Makris Gialos and just 3,5 km from Argostoli. It is well known for its unspoiled beauty.

It consists of white sand and crystalline waters. It is one of the most famous beaches of Kefalonia, and it gathers both locals and tourists. The beach is also suitable for kids, as it is sandy and the waters near the beach are shallow.

The beach has been awarded with the Blue Flag for its cleanness and fine organization. The area is surrounded by a beautiful environment of lush green hills and thick vegetation. On the beach, you will find sun loungers and a snack bar, while there is no water sport center.

Skala Beach

Skala Beach is located on 35 km away from Argostoli, on the southern tip of Kefalonia. It is known for its beautiful layout and long sandy beach.

The beautiful beach is surrounded by pine trees and rocky outcrops, a unique combination that captivates many visitors. The beach has been awarded with the Blue Flag for its cleanness and fine organization, parameters  that is famous for. There are several beach bars with umbrellas and sun beds, but you can still find a secluded spot for some quiet moments.

There are a variety of water sports available, and boats and kayaks for hire. Also the beach is ideal for snorkeling while excursion boats depart to the nearby islets and isolated coves. On the main street, right above the beach, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes, mini markets and other modern amenities.

Ai-Helis Beach

Ai-Helis is found in the southwest part of Kefalonia, 11 km from Argostoli and close to the village of Svoronata.

It is surrounded on both sides by towering rocks and enchanting lush greenery, which creates a beautiful atmosphere. The beach consists of nice sand, crystalline waters with a gentle slope in depth, which makes it an ideal environment for children.

Half of its part is well-organized with sun beds, umbrellas, a shower, toilets, and a snack bar but there is much free space available as well. There is no water sport center, but it offers two volley courts that makes ideal for the beach volley fans.

There is a nice car park also, just ten minute walk to the beach.

Alaties Beach

Alaties beach (meaning salty in Greek) is located 45 km away from Argostoli, and only 20 minutes drive from Fiscardo.

It is a tiny yet really beautiful sandy cove, that offers crystalline turquoise waters and a fascinating seabed. Visitors should use extra caution due to the sea currents. It is not an organized beach, so there are no tourist facilities; the beach remains unspoiled and peaceful.

Some meters above the beach, is a picturesque tavern where one can enjoy not only delicious meals from the local recipes and nice wine, but also a perfect sunset.

Xi Beach

Xi beach is located in the peninsula of Paliki. It is a long drive from Argostoli; about 40 km and 10 km from Lixouri.

It is one of the most famous beaches in Kefalonia, characterized by its white rocky hills that surround the beach and the red sand. The beach took its name from the cove that has the shape of the letter X.

The beach is quite well-organized with umbrellas, sun beds and beach bar. Even if it is crowded, you will find a quiet place to relax. In addition, there is a water sports center for the more adventurous visitors.

The shallow waters and the gentle waves create the ideal environment for the children. Around the area, one will find many taverns, rooms to rent and small shops. The beach is easily accessed by car or public buses.
