Poulata

Poulata is located 25 km southeast of Argostoli, 5 miles southwest of Sami and has 142 residents. Poulata belongs to the municipal unit of Sami of the Municipality of Kefalonia. It is a small village located in the green next to olive groves and vineyards.

It is rumored that the name was taken from the many birds that existed in the area. It has beautiful and well maintained homes with great views of the bay of the port of Sami and the island of Ithaca.

There aren’t several tourist accommodation in the area but the visitor can find all sorts of accommodation in the villages of Sami and Karavomilos. which are very close to Poulata. Also very close is the famous cave Drogarati and the Lake-cave Melissani.

The sacred temple of Saint Spyridon can not pass unnoticed by the visitor, since it is a pre-earthquake temple belonging to the Anninos family. Since 1970 it has been announced a monument, along with its bell tower.

The area is of particular geological interest due to the about 17 caves that are there; the most important of which is the Aggalaki Cave which is a cave with stalactites and a small lake inside. In 2007 the cave entered the W.W.F program for the protection of wetlands of the islands of Greece.
